About Us

The National Academy of Sciences (ANC) was created by Executive Decree 21358-MICIT of 1992, but later the "Law for the Creation of the National Academy of Sciences, Law 7544 of 1995" was approved, creating the ANC as a non-state public law institution with the mission of advising the powers of the Costa Rican State in Science and Technology, promoting scientific and technological research in the country and constituting a multidisciplinary forum for permanent scientific discussion, with emphasis on the global advancement of science and research into national problems. This law has given legal support to the Academy, as well as the subsequent approval of the "Statutes of the National Academy of Sciences" by Executive Decree No. 30628-MICIT of 2002. Also, the ANC is based on article 66 of the "Law for the Promotion of Scientific and Technological Development", Law 7169 of 1990. This article was modified in Law 9971 "Creation of the Costa Rican Promoter of Innovation and Research" of May 28, 2021 (La Gaceta No. 102).

All the work carried out by the members of the National Academy of Sciences is ad honorem (free of charge) and is offered altruistically, such as the statements issuing opinions on different aspects (Covid for example), the opinions issued on bills, participation in government commissions, collaboration with different ministries and other institutions, holding conferences, symposia, courses, forums, etc. (either alone or jointly with other public institutions), participation in international organizations, participation in commissions for the Academy's own work (for example, those on Gender, Education, Human Rights) and vocational and scientific dissemination activities in schools and colleges, as well as their participation in the General Assembly and the Board of Directors of the ANC and in the Board of Directors of the NIC Costa Rica and its activities.

The ANC also benefits from the valuable collaboration of specialists who, although not members of the ANC, participate in its activities in various ways and also as its representatives on various committees. These people collaborate on an ad honorem (free) and altruistic basis, and the ANC is deeply grateful to them.

The Government of the Republic makes a transfer to cover operating expenses: salaries of three collaborators and fixed costs. Activities and projects are carried out, in part, with an amount received from the NIC Costa Rica unit.
