Gracias a una beca del gobierno sueco, continu\u00f3 con estudios de maestr\u00eda y posteriormente de doctorado en el Instituto Karolinska en Suecia. Actualmente es catedr\u00e1tica en la Universidad Nacional, coordinadora de los laboratorios de Bioqu\u00edmica e Inmunolog\u00eda en la Escuela de Medicina Veterinaria de la UNA. Coordin\u00f3 del Programa de Investigaci\u00f3n en Enfermedades Tropicales en los \u00faltimos 15 a\u00f1os. Su grupo de investigaci\u00f3n se dedica a estudiar las razones por las cuales las bacterias del g\u00e9nero Brucella, causan infecci\u00f3n en humanos y animales.<\/p>\n<p>La mayor\u00eda de los microorganismos que causan enfermedad en los seres humanos provienen del contacto inapropiado con animales, donde la transgresi\u00f3n de barreras naturales es cr\u00edtica. Poder comprender c\u00f3mo se transgreden estas barreras biol\u00f3gicas, particularmente como un microorganismo se puede adaptar a vivir en otro hospedero, es relevante para poder entender c\u00f3mo emergen los microorganismos que causan da\u00f1o. Las bacterias del g\u00e9nero Brucella comparten a nivel de sus genomas un 96-98% de similitud, a pesar de que infectan distintas especies de animales. Utilizamos t\u00e9cnicas de alta resoluci\u00f3n, como lo es la secuenciaci\u00f3n de genomas completos de aislamientos de Brucella que circulan en Costa Rica, para poder entender en qu\u00e9 radica esa especificidad hacia una especie animal en particular. Caterina es tambi\u00e9n miembro del Comit\u00e9 Etico Cient\u00edfico de la Universidad Nacional y fue hasta el 2020 miembro del Consejo Central de Posgrado de la misma Universidad.
